Description

The Gooden Grant House in Head Harbor on Isle au Haut out in Penobscot Bay is an iconic historic home.  Built by a successful fisherman at the turn of the twentieth century, this Maine Island retreat is as an anchor holding fast the heritage of 19th century fishermen who worked and raised families on these pristine rugged islands.  Some things have changed, but much has not.  Now there is electricity and high speed Internet, but still there is a quiet solitude in island living, occasionally punctuated by the spectacle of the Atlantic Ocean's power.  The lobster fishing in and around Head Harbor remains the best in the world, and wilderness extends from the dooryard for miles along the south and west shore—just as it always has.

Writers and artists find the Gooden Grant House a perfect retreat to recharge their creative batteries.  Children find safe harbor of gentle waves and a length of beach full of ocean treasures for young minds and hands – sea glass, sand dollars, and hermit crabs and other creatures in the tide pools and on the expansive sand flat at low tide.  Hikers find breathtaking vistas along the Cliff Trail and from the top of Duck Harbor Mountain or Black Dinah Ledge.  Fishermen find stripers, mackerel and blue fish in the harbor and brook trout in the pond—a ten-minute walk north of the house.  Kayakers paddle the ocean shore and explore Long Pond.  Sailors find Head Harbor a snug anchorage to spend a night or a few nights.
